The push for an Australian Republic is an ongoing saga that is no closer to gaining traction than it was in 1999, when it was voted down in all states and 72% of electorates.

Three main reasons I believe we should remain a Constitutional Monarchy:

1. The Crown is our oldest institution, central to the constitution, and has served us extremely well. Throwing away something so integral to our peace, success and stability for a pointless and ill conceived change would be nothing short of idiotic.
2. Our Crowned Republic provides leadership beyond politics, important not so much for the power that it wields, but the power that it denies to others.
3. Australia is already a completely independent nation, with all constitutional ties to Britain already cut. The Queen is indeed The Queen of Australia, and happens to be shared with the other realms - a multicultural crown.

Why we will never become a Politicians Republic:

Two of our founding fathers Sir John Quick and Sir Robert Garren said of the referendum provision:

"These safeguards have been provided, not in order to prevent or indefinitely resist change in any direction, but in order to prevent change being made in haste or by stealth, to encourage public discussion, and to delay change until there is strong evidence that it is  desirable, irresistible and inevitable" (The Annotated Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia, 1901, page 988)

It is certainly not desirable or irresistible, in fact they don't even know what it is that they are proposing! Until such time as Republicans agree on a model, which will not happen, the Australian people want absolutely nothing to do with any change.

The mere suggestion that something is inevitable suggests that there is not choice involved, and the Australian people have made it very clear in 1999 that they do not want a Politicians' Republic but are happy under our Crowned Republic.

Why is it then that Republicans continue to push this propaganda, knowing perfectly well that no one wants a bar of it?
